Gift Aid For Rotary Swimarathon 2010

What Is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a relief granted by the Inland Revenue to assist Charities to raise additional funds. Charities can reclaim tax at standard rate on all donations or sponsorship received, provided the donor is a UK tax paying individual. The donor must provide the Charity with their name and address and agree that their donation or sponsorship is a gift aid donation.

The frequently asked Questions and Answers below should cover anything you need to know about Gift Aid and how The Rotary Swimarathon organisers can administer the scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Q1. How can I increase my donation (or sponsorship) at no extra cost to myself?

A1. By Confirming that you are a UK Tax Payer and that you wish to make your donation (or sponsorship) under gift aid.

Q2.  How do I confirm that I wish to make my donation (or sponsorship) under gift aid?

A2. Complete your name and initials, house number and Post Code and amount you are donating (or sponsoring) and then just tick the gift aid column on the Rotary Swimarathon sponsor form.

Q3. Why, what happens when I tick the Gift Aid Box?

A3. With your agreement to donate (or Sponsor) under gift aid The Rotary Club of Grantham, (which is a registered Charity), can then reclaim 22/78ths of your donation from the Inland Revenue. This is in addition to the donation or (sponsorship) which you have made.

Q4. Who is eligible to make Gift Aid donations (or sponsorship). Can all sponsors make Gift Aid Donations (or sponsorship)?

A4. Only Individuals who are tax payers and who will pay an amount of income tax or capital gains tax, in the tax year, at least equal to the tax to be reclaimed on their donation (or sponsorship).

Q5. What happens if I am a Higher rate taxpayer?

A5. Donors (or sponsors) who are liable to the higher rate of tax of 40% can also claim the difference between the standard rate of 22% and the higher rate of 40% i.e. a further 18% relief would be available on the grossed up amount. To claim the higher rate relief the taxpayer would have to complete the appropriate section of their tax return.

So Will Gift Aid Help The Rotary Swimarathon Event To Raise Funds?

Certainly. The 2003 Rotary Swimarathon swimming teams raised over £25,000 in team sponsorship. Assuming that half of the team sponsors were tax payers and we had collected Gift Aid we would have had another £3,525 to grant to local worthwhile causes. In 2004 an extra £2400 was raised through gift aid. In 2005 an extra £2900 was raised through gift aid.

Is It Worth All The Fuss?

The Rotary Club of Grantham and the Rotary Swimarathon Committee thinks it is. In the past our swimmers have been getting and collecting sponsorship money from the local community. They have been getting names and addresses as well as the amount of sponsorship. The only additional piece of information that we need is a tick in a box to indicate that you are a UK tax payer and you wish to make your donation (or sponsorship) a Gift Aid donation. It's So Easy For You.

The Rotary Swimarathon committee will do the rest.
